Blackberries

Digging up these thorny stumps

Thriving on ignorance

On tolerance

On laissez-faire and devil-may-care

I am struck by how far they reach

Anger in waves at each new root

Thick and thin and along the stem

We beat them back, try to gain ground

We ought already to have

I rip trenches in the soil

My buttercups are torn

As I grip thorns and wrench them up
